description: During the last free election, Stanisław Małachowski (1736–1809) supported the Czartoryski’s Familia and their candidate, Stanisław Poniatowski. However, Małachowski remained neutral in the political fight between aristocratic parties and King Stanisław August in a later period. Appointed Marshal of the Crown Tribunal, the highest appeal court in Poland, Małachowski became famous as a judge of unimpeachable honesty. These virtues earned him the title of the “Polish Aristides.” Elected Marshal of the Four-Year Seym, Małachowski co-authored the Constitution of May 3, 1791 together with Ignacy Potocki and Hugo Kołłątaj. Małachowski condemned the Targowica Confederation, and after the king joined it, he withdrew from political life. Called by Napoleon, he returned to politics in 1806. At that time, he acted as Prime Minister in Polish governments and later President of the Senate. As a supporter of old views expressed in the Constitution of May 3, 1791, he countered the introduction of the Napoleonic Code in the Polish lands to the end of his life. Giovanni Batista Lampi arrived in Poland in 1788. The artist did portraits of the king, members of the royal court and famous figures of the political and social life of the day. Portrait of Stanisław Małachowski, exhibited in Krakow, is a very good replica of the original work by Lampi, which is part of the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw. Barbara Ciciora
