description: Tadeusz Ajdukiewicz travelled to the Middle East for the first time in 1877 with Count Władysław Branicki. From that time on, the memories of this exotic journey constantly recurred in his works. The painting At the Well represents the Oriental painting genre, popular among the Polish painters who visited the countries of the East. Their stays were short, impressions usually superficial, and this is exactly how they depicted the Orient in their works. Ajdukiewicz painted an uncomplicated small-format genre scene with two people dressed in Eastern costumes against a background of exotic architecture. It was painted in the way typical of academic canvases, composed based on studies of figures and objects, alternatively on sketches from nature done outside a studio. The painter unified the scene by means of uniform perspective and artificial lighting. Barbara Ciciora
