description: Under the influence of Munich landscape painters and the French Barbizon School, Zygmunt Sidorowicz often produced compositions depicting landscapes with forests and meadows with genre staffage. Landscape with Cows, painted after the artist’s return from Munich to Vienna, shows a meadow with clumps of trees. The shining surface of a pond or a river occupies the foreground. There is a peasant homestead hidden in the shadow of the trees in the distance. A shepherd boy, mounted on a horse, is leading a herd of cattle to a watering-place. The work is characterized by delicate, diffused light, typical of cloudy, autumn weather. The way of representing nature is devoid of the picturesque, which is accompanied by an attempt at the accurate representation of the surrounding world. Sidorowicz did not manage to avoid some schematization, resulting probably from a desire to adapt his work to the requirements set by the art critics of the day, according to which domestic artists had to concentrate on painting Polish landscapes emphasizing positive aspects and peculiarities of different lands and regions, e.g., Masovia, Małopolska, Kielce region, Podolia, Volhynia or the Tatras.
