material: oil on canvas
dimensions: 19 × 29 cm
description: Stanisławski, who fell in love with Ukrainian landscapes, created a series of small paintings showing the power of Ukrainian nature. As a professor at the chair of landscape of the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts, he recommended painting nature - so fleeting and constantly threatened by civilization. He took his students outdoors to paint, which was a novelty when compared with the traditional technique of painting nature in the quiet of one’s studio. The beehives in this painting seem to hover in the motionless air of a hot, late, summer day. The illumination effects, the use of half-tints of yellow, orange and warm brown, as well as their the irregular spots of colour on the canvas indicate that also Stanisławski could not resist the temptation to use the techniques known from French impressionism.

exposition: The Gallery of 19th Century Polish Art in Sukiennice,
The Cloth Hall, 1, Main Market Square
key: Realism, polish impressionism, beginnings of symbolism >>>
