description: De Laveaux became interested in night lighting under the influence of Aleksander Gierymski, whom he most likely met already during his studies, but it was only in Paris that de Laveaux had an opportunity to get to know him better. He became fascinated by his nocturnes, which he expressed most fully in Opera Square in Paris (1892–1893), filled with dull lights, nuances and blurring. The painting was directly inspired by the art of Gierymski. In general, however, the painter followed his own path. His oil studies, executed in the evening and late into the night in the squares and streets of Paris, reveal expressionist tendencies. A Motif from Paris depicts an empty avenue in perspective with a solitary horse-drawn carriage. The main theme of the painting are street lights with different temperatures of colour and range, falling from various sources. And thus dull, flickering and harsh colours visible straight ahead in the distance are reflected in the shape of a zigzag in the middle of the road. Little lamps of the carriage shine delicately nearby. Moreover, on both sides of the avenue, among trees, there are rows of windows of some cafes, shops and other buildings burning with yellow and red, which adds a reddish lustre to the crowns of trees from the bottom. The painting expresses the freshness and energy of the painter’s experiences in direct contact with urban night scenery. Anna Zeńczak
