Stanisław Wyspiański Year at the National Museum in Krakow.
The Monumental Theatre of Stanisław Wyspiański was an exhibition mounted by the National Museum in Krakow to mark the 100th anniversary of the artist’s death. It was
a valuable enhancement to a rich permanent presentation of the artist’s visual works that are on view at the National Museum in Krakow in the Gallery of 20th-Century Polish Art and the Stanisław Wyspiański Museum.
This time the Museum ventured an experiment: using modern media such as videos, large-size photographs, computer programmes, digital presentations, as well as audio recordings, both spoken and musical, the exhibition let the viewer live a great adventure with Wyspiański and his work. The artist’s output covers a range of art media, literature and theatre, and represents one of the most unique phenomena in Polish culture and beyond. With its ingenious, unrepeatable style of painting and poetry, and a unique use of music and elements of old art and culture, Wyspiański’s “enormous theatre” was staged across vast expanses of history and the present day.
